Notes from the Baronial Moot held August 4, 2001

As transcribed by M. Dunstana Talana the Violet

Voting on the baronial motto began for the moot, and continued through the meeting.

Lord Ian Dun Gillan, Seneschal for the Barony of Northkeep, started the meeting at 9:30 p.m.  He thanked everyone the large turnout, and thanked Charles and Betsy for their hospitality.

Two items on the agenda for the moot: the baronial motto and how the baronial selection will proceed.

The Vicar, Lord Robert Fitzmorgan, passed on information from Her Majesty, Larissa..  The deadline for sending in letters of intent from those who wish to be considered as baronial candidates is September 9.  Letters need to have copies sent to Their Majesties, the Kingdom Seneschal, the Baronial Seneschal, and the Vicar.

September 28–30 is Weisenfeuer Baronial.  On Saturday of that event, Her Majesty will interview the candidates.  On the next day, Sunday, she will come to Northkeep to oversee our polling.  We do not have a time or place reserved yet, but will let the populace know as soon as we do.

The polling is for us to express our preferences – please remember that the Crown is not obligated to seat our choice, though they will take our preference under advisement.  The final decision rests with them.

Some of the populace are planning to attend Diamond Wars that weekend.  Their Majesties will accept absentee votes, but only if such votes are in Their Majesties’ hands prior to the polling.  Her Majesty can provide absentee ballots to those who need them.  Robert will get more details about this.

Two colors of ballots will be used, so that both paid and non-paid members can vote.

Her Majesty asked  Robert to let the populace know she has been watching our situation, and is proud of us and how we are handling ourselves.  Robert expressed his pride in the group as well.  Her Majesty is available to anyone who wishes to communicate with her, either via e-mail or telephone.  Daytime is better for her for phone calls.

The Dionadair and Ensign Tournaments will be held September 8 at Woodward Park.  The two tournaments will be held in alternating rounds through the afternoon.  That evening  Angus and Cianna will be hosting a revel at their home.  Details will be available in the August issue of the Saga.

The group decided that another moot is not necessary.

Ian reminded everyone that they can contact the Crown or Kingdom officers directly with any questions about what is going on or, if they would rather, they can pass their questions and comments up via Ian and Robert.

The current list of those who have declared their intentions to stand for Baron and Baroness are:

Lord Ian and Lady Kelandra
Lord Thorvald and Lady Jessamy
Lord Ainar and Lady Mercedes
Sir Balvin and Lady Francesca
Lord Magnus and Lady Heather

Lord Yoshi Hokumori has withdrawn his candidacy

Her Majesty has asked for our investiture to be as special an event as possible.  She specifically asked for award recommendations.  She would like this event to be memorable on all points.

Recommendations can be e-mailed or sent via post.  Recommendation forms can be found on the kingdom web page – these forms can either be filled out on line and e-mailed, or printed off and posted.  The local officers can also help you prepare a recommendation.

If you don’t know what award is appropriate, ask any officer or experienced member.

The Toy Tourney will be part of our investiture event.  Baroness Mary Blackaxe is in charge of the tourney this year..  Please support the tourney and make your contributions, as we always have.

Lord Anton and Mistress Catrin are the autocrats for the Investiture.  The first planning meeting is set for next Sunday at 2 p.m. at their home  Please come or contact them if you have any ideas for the event.  Anton will post directions on the Northkeep list.

Based on questions raised by Lynn, Leah, and Kevin, a discussion was held concerning how questions can be presented to the candidates regarding their plans should they be appointed Baron and Baroness.  Lynn the Inquisitive will set up a site where people may post questions, and she will forward them to the candidates, and post the responses so that everyone can ready them.  The candidates will each prepare a one-page article for the Saga, explaining their plans for the barony.  The populace is also encouraged to approach the candidates directly with their questions.

Ian suggested that, for anyone posting to the baronial officers’ accounts, to use their return-receipt feature, as there have been some delivery problems of late.

We want our Investiture to be a spectacular event, with as much display as possible – banners, table decorations, and the like.  Ian would like, once the Crown names the baronial couple, that banners with their personal arms be made.  Contact the autocrats if you have stuff to offer or ideas.   Households are encouraged to prepare displays as well.

Charles will be holding  some training sessions for the six weeks before Namron Protectorate, on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5:00 p.m.  This is for the benefit of getting some of the Melee members started in SCA –style combat.  Lords Vygen and Hungus will be attending.

Charles and Betsy also will be having a Christmas bonfire on Christmas night at his home:  all the barony is invited to attend.
